You know the feeling.

Something happens, a stressful conversation, a wave of loneliness, a moment of boredom that turns into restlessness, and suddenly you’re standing at the edge of a cliff. Your brain is telling you one thing is going to make this feeling go away. You’re not thinking clearly anymore.

You’re just trying to survive the next five minutes.

Here’s something we talk about extensively in the Rewired course: acting out doesn’t come from a place of strength or even desire, most of the time. It comes from dysregulation. Your nervous system has gone into a state of alarm or overwhelm, and your body is looking for the fastest route back to feeling normal. It’s not really about sex or lust in that moment. It’s about your body screaming for relief from a state it can’t tolerate.

When you’re that dysregulated, you can’t think your way out or rationalize your way out. Willpower and logic live in the prefrontal cortex, and when your nervous system is flooded, that part of your brain is offline. It’s not weakness. It’s neurology. Telling yourself “just don’t do it” in that moment is like trying to reason with a smoke alarm.

That’s the idea behind what I call regulation hacks. I want to be upfront about what these are and aren’t. These are not tools for lasting freedom. They won’t touch the underlying pain, the attachment wounds, or the unmet needs driving the pattern.

That deeper work is what Rewired, community, and counseling are for. What these hacks do is buy you time and space by shifting your body out of crisis mode so you can actually make a choice again.

Here are three that work.

REAL PEOPLE. REAL COMMUNITY. REAL FREEDOM.

1. Ice Facial Immersion

This is one of the fastest ways to interrupt a spiral and a favorite of mine. Fill a bowl with ice water, or run cold water in the sink, and submerge your face for 15 to 30 seconds. What’s happening physiologically is real and well documented.

Cold water on your face triggers the trigeminal-vagal reflex. The cold receptors in your face activate the vagus nerve, your body’s main parasympathetic “calm down” pathway, and your heart rate drops fast. Researchers have used this exact technique, called the Cold Face Test, in clinical settings to study how vagal activation reduces stress response.

It’s faster and more accessible, no need to strip down or plan ahead. A full body ice bath is more of a hard reset, a bigger physiological shock that some people use intentionally, but it’s not something to reach for impulsively in a moment of crisis. Facial immersion gives you a strong, fast vagal hit without that added intensity or risk.

Don’t expect one dunk to fully reset you. Do it in rounds, 3 to 4 times, holding 15 to 30 seconds with a short break in between. The reflex is fast, but the full calming effect tends to build over those repeated rounds. Give it five to ten minutes to actually land.

One caution worth naming: the dive reflex works by slowing your heart rate down. For most people that’s the point, but if you have a heart condition or cardiac risk factors, talk to your doctor before using cold immersion regularly.

2. Diaphragmatic Breathing

Not just “breathing exercises” in the vague sense. Specific, intentional breathing, for about two to three minutes. Sit or stand still and bring all your attention to the breath itself.

  • What do you notice as the air comes in?
  • What do you feel as it goes out?
  • How does the air feel against your lip, your nostrils?

One detail matters more than people realize: breathe from your diaphragm, not your chest. Shallow chest breathing keeps your sympathetic nervous system activated, the same system driving the urge to act out, and can make an already overstimulated nervous system worse.

Diaphragmatic breathing, slow inhales that expand your belly rather than raise your shoulders, is what signals safety to your body and engages the same parasympathetic system the cold water hits.

3. Move Your Body

Go for a run. Take a walk. Do push-ups. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Any real change in your physical state produces a change in your mental state.

There’s a real mechanism here, not just intuition. When you’re triggered, your body has already dumped stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol into your system, priming you for action. Movement is literally what that response was built for.

Exercise helps metabolize those hormones instead of leaving them circulating with nowhere to go, and it demands enough attention that it interrupts rumination. You cannot stay locked in the same mental loop while your body is doing something entirely different.

Understand that these three hacks aren’t a cure.

They’re a circuit breaker. What they buy you is a few minutes of clearer thinking, a body that’s no longer in alarm mode, and a real choice instead of a compulsion. What you do with that window matters. Long-term freedom means going back and asking why that dysregulation showed up in the first place, what need wasn’t getting met, what pain you were trying to outrun. That’s the work we walk through together in Rewired.

So next time you feel yourself heading toward that edge, try one of these hacks. Then reach out. Because regulation gets you through the moment. But connection and understanding get you free.

And, If you’re tired of white-knuckling your way through moments like this and you want to actually get at the root of why you’re getting dysregulated in the first place, that’s exactly what we built Rewired for. It’s not another willpower program. It’s brain science, nervous system work, and community, all aimed at the real cause instead of just the symptom. Check it out here.
