The Benefits of Prayer & Bible Reading
This may be a question you’ve entertained if you struggle with compulsive sexual behaviors and come from a Christian or religious background. And it’s understandable. The Bible is clear about the need for believers to commit themselves to ongoing scripture reading and prayer.
In fact, both of these devotional practices are often encouraged by biblical authors and offer many benefits to those who engage in them, including inner peace, increased wisdom, strength, protection, self-transformation, comfort, and joy. Yet, it’s easy to overlook the importance of daily prayer and Bible reading given the busy nature of today’s modern world.
Given that we often deal with men from Christian backgrounds, these questions and topics come up frequently. But usually, when they do, there isn’t much reason given for doing these things other than “the Bible says so.” And while that may be enough reason for some people, for others it may come across as a little hollow or empty.
I know for myself, as a young man, I was not overly motivated to engage in these practices beyond my desire to avoid religious guilt.
This was because I never understood the value of these spiritual disciplines. I only thought of prayer and Bible reading as tasks I had to engage in to be considered a “good Christian” rather than appreciating the true benefits they offered. But the truth is, daily prayer and Bible reading can greatly benefit one’s mental health and play a vital role in effective addiction recovery.
This is not just my opinion but something that has been empirically shown to be true. In fact, while the Bible is full of exhortations to pray without ceasing and meditate on the Scriptures day and night, the psychological benefits of these spiritual practices are well-documented. As such, here are four research-supported ways prayer and Bible reading can benefit someone.
Stop Simply Surviving & Start Thriving
Join the Live Free CommunityEmpirical studies have repeatedly shown that engaging in spiritual practices such as prayer and meditation can have a positive impact on mental health, reducing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. In fact, prayer has been linked to changes in brain activity, specifically in areas related to stress regulation, which may contribute to these mental health benefits.
This is particularly relevant to those in recovery, as prayer and meditation may help individuals regulate their emotions more effectively, reducing the need for maladaptive coping mechanisms and the likelihood of relapse.
Research has also found that individuals who incorporate spiritual practices into their daily routine, such as daily devotions and quiet time, tend to experience lower levels of psychological distress and greater overall well-being. This is because prayer and meditation provide a means of coping with life’s challenges by fostering a sense of inner peace and serenity even in the midst of adversity.
Moreover, prayer has been shown to increase feelings of gratitude and positive emotions, which can enhance emotional resilience and self-esteem. Again, these findings are highly relevant to those in recovery, as the need to act out is often triggered by a sense of low self-worth and/or an inability to cope with negative emotions.
Engaging in prayer and scripture reading can deepen one’s sense of connection with God. This sense of connection can provide comfort, guidance, and feelings of being supported, which directly benefit a person’s emotional well-being. Additionally, research suggests that this sense of connection is associated with reduced feelings of loneliness and increased feelings of belonging.
All of these factors work together to help one feel safe, connected, and loved. This benefit cannot be overstated, as individuals who act out sexually often do so due to their desire for human connection and avoidance of emotional danger.
Finally, studies have indicated that engaging with God’s Word through daily prayer and Bible reading can lead to a deeper understanding of God’s will and purpose for their lives. This insight can result in an enhanced sense of purpose and meaning, as individuals align their goals and actions with their spiritual beliefs. This congruence can contribute to one’s overall life satisfaction and well-being, providing a sense of direction and fulfillment which is essential for those in recovery, who may struggle to look beyond their unwanted and compulsive behaviors.
Ultimately, while the Bible emphasizes the importance of daily prayer and Bible reading, these ancient practices have also been empirically proven to benefit an individual’s mental health and addiction recovery, reaffirming the profound connection between spiritual well-being and psychological health.
Therefore, as we strive to cultivate a deeper relationship with God and find healing and wholeness in our lives, let’s engage in the transformative power of daily prayer and Bible reading not just out of religious obligation, but in the pursuit of a healthier and happier self.
